DMV office on Fell Street open after open after Thursday's broken water main

The Department of Motor Vehicles field office in San Francisco is open this morning, after closing temporarily Thursday due to flooding caused by a broken water main nearby.

DMV spokesman Jaime Garza said work crews had to vacuum out the water and bring in fans to dry the floor.

There had been concerns that the facility may remain closed today due to ongoing cleanup efforts, but the office at 1377 Fell St. opened at 8 a.m. for their regularly scheduled business hours.

"We apologize for any inconvenience to our customers," Garza said. "This was out of our control and we were waiting until it was safe to let people back in."

The flooding was caused by an aging 8-inch water main that ruptured early Thursday morning just around the corner in the vicinity of Oak and Baker streets, according to the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission.

According to the DMV website, wait time at the San Francisco field office for customers who do not have an appointment was estimated at just under two hours and 45 minutes as of 11 a.m.
