Divers find body where missing fisherman last seen

Divers searching for missing fisherman Eric Wright, 32, in the Bethany Reservoir in Alameda County located a body underwater just after 3 p.m. today, Sheriff's Sgt. J.D. Nelson said.

The body was found near the area where Wright's boat was seen capsized the afternoon of his disappearance, Nelson said.

Alameda County coroner's bureau officials will work to identify the body and notify the victim's family before confirming that it belongs to Wright.

"Yes, we have found a body, and it is in the area where Mr. Wright was last seen," Nelson said. "Until the coroner makes an identification and notifications I cant say 100 percent for sure."

Wright, of Tracy, was fishing in the reservoir, located in a state recreation area northeast of Livermore, on Dec. 23 with his father-in-law, Nelson said. He reportedly asked his father-in-law if he could take the boat out for another spin around the reservoir before leaving for the day, Sgt. James Jukich said.

His father-in-law agreed, saying he would go to the bathroom and retrieve the truck used to transport the 12-foot aluminum boat before coming back to the boat ramp, according to Jukich.

The father-in-law returned to see the boat capsized about 200 to 300 yards offshore and Wright nowhere in sight, according to Nelson.

Sheriff's divers, search dogs, and helicopters with infrared technology began searching the 49-degree reservoir water and the surrounding recreation area at about 4 p.m. Dec. 23, Nelson said.

The extensive searching ended after about 24 hours and turned to recovery.

Divers returned to the water Dec. 29 and today to continue the search.
