Divers being sent to locate container that fell off ship

The U.S. Coast Guard isn’t allowing some vessels to cross the entrance to the Oakland Estuary on Sunday until a container that fell off a ship and into the water can be located.

The Coast Guard received a report at about 8:30 p.m. Saturday that an empty container fell off of the container ship Sun Right. It sank near the entrance to the Oakland Estuary.

The vessel Sun Right was at the Ben E. Nutter Marine Container Terminal in Oakland when a crane knocked it into the water, according to the Coast Guard.

Divers were expected to start trying to locate the container around 11 a.m. Sunday.

The Coast Guard is broadcasting a safety message every two hours to inform mariners of the situation.
