Dim Bulb of the Week: John Edwards

What: The former Democratic presidential candidate admitted to an affair with 42-year-old Rielle Hunter while his wife was battling cancer. Edwards, who has not taken a paternity test, also denied that he fathered the woman’s child.

When: In 2006, Edwards’ political action committee paid $100,000 in a four-month period to Hunter’s firm for the production of four videos for the Web. Hunter’s daughter was born Feb. 27 of this year. Edwards says because of the timing of the affair and the birth he knows he is not the father.

Why: Edwards was a top contender early on for the Democratic nomination for president, but he dropped out a few weeks after placing second in the Iowa caucuses in January. Even if Edwards manages to patch things up with his wife, it is hard to imagine the affair not playing a role in any future political campaign on which he embarks in the future.
