Digital Breakdown: ‘Street Kings’ deserves a second chance

The action film “Street Kings” isn’t nearly as bad as critics said when it opened in theaters. It’s a slick, violent, disturbing tale of corrupt Los Angeles police, describing what happens when one cop (Keanu Reeves) tries to break away from a web of betrayal surrounding him.

The DVD’s cool extras include scenes from a drive through of South Central in search of filming locales, 15 deleted scenes, 10 alternate scenes and 10 production vignettes. On Blu-ray, a “picture-in-picture” featurette adds fun facts about many aspects of the movie. There’s also an interview with soundtrack composer DJ Muggs from the hip-hop group Cypress Hill. Price: $34.98 to 39.98. Rent or buy: Buy.

TERMINATOR — THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON

This show, based on a trilogy of theatrical films, seems fragmented. Helped by its status as a midseason replacement during the writers strike in Hollywood. With this DVD, viewers can catch up on what they missed before season two begins. The three-disc set has nine episodes from the first season, deleted scenes and information about the program’s production. It’s also available in Blu-ray. Price: $28.98 to $39.99. Rent or buy: Rent.

GOSSIP GIRL — THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON

With lots of racy ads all over big cities, the CW network is doing its best to generate buzz and controversy for the second season of “Gossip Girl.” For those who missed the first season, here it is in a five-disc set. The box has 18 episodes and four hours of extras including three featurettes, deleted scenes, gag reels, music videos and even a free book download. Price: $59.98. Rent or buy: Rent.

BEST OF BOTH WORLDS: THE 3-D MOVIE

This two-disc DVD for tweens follows Miley Cyrus as she transforms into her “Hannah Montana” alter ego; it also provides backstage antics from her sold-out concert tour. Extras include alternate performances, songs from the Jonas Brothers and deleted and behind-the-scenes footage. It’s a must for the kids. Price: $34.99. Rent or buy: Buy, if you have tweens.

Other DVDs debuting this week: “Recount,” “Redbelt,” “Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day,” “Made of Honor,” “Camp Rock.”
