Devil's Canyon brings brews to San Carlos

On the hop-forward front, the ever-popular and growing Devil's Canyon Brewing Co. has moved operations to San Carlos after a dozen years in its Belmont digs. For now, the brewery continues to mainly sell its brews via restaurants and bars, aside from growler fills every Friday (4-6 p.m.) and an open house the final Friday of each month. Tonight is the first Beer Friday event in the new space. Bring the family and the dog to enjoy food, live music and a pint of Full Boar Scotch Ale to welcome summer and the brewery to San Carlos.

San Mateo

•Craving sweets in San Mateo? Now there's Creations Dessert Express, the new sibling of San Francisco's Creations Dessert House and part of a Hong Kong-based Asian dessert chain. The shop has local Three Twins ice cream available by the scoop, but its signature items are dessert crepes, jelly drinks and glutinous rice balls paired with juices such as mango and honeydew. If dessert isn't your thing, a handful of savory snacks like curry fish balls and fried radish cakes are offered.

Menlo Park

•If you're a Belgian beer fan and pastrami is part of your day, you probably already frequent The Refuge often. Now chef-owner Matt Levin has opened a second branch in Menlo Park, bringing his popular Reuben and rib-eye cheesesteaks with him. The famed pastrami pops up everywhere on the menu, from chopped salads to the Goofy fries coated in cheese sauce, but it's not the only innovation happening in the kitchen: Try the 9-ounce mole burger with jalapenos and cilantro, or a griddled cambozola-pear sandwich. The bar is where to get your education on Belgian beers, complete with a daunting 24 taps pouring the likes of Kwak and Moinette — the most Belgian ales on draft in the Bay Area.

Palo Alto

•It's only natural that after opening the original CREAM three years ago next to UC Berkeley, the second edition would be next to Stanford in the heart of downtown Palo Alto. CREAM's centerpiece is everyone's childhood favorite, ice cream sandwiches. The mix-and-match opportunities are dizzying between the 16 house-made ice creams, 10 types of house-made cookies and various toppings. Is today a day for matcha green tea ice cream with oatmeal raisin cookies, or cappuccino cookies sandwiching salted caramel ice cream, topped with chocolate sauce? You have some time to decide: on weekends, the shop is open until 2 a.m.
