Despite slowdown at main hall, girls' camp opens on schedule

The 30-bed minimum-security girls’ camp, part of the Youth Services Center just down the road, is already up and running.

The girls’ camp, much like Camp Glenwood for boys, will offer gender-specific programs, including counseling for physically, psychologically and sexually abused victims. The facility will also allow wards regular visits with their children and families, which are often instrumental in giving women a reason to turn their lives around, officials said.

"An intricate part of the treatment is family counseling," Chief Probation Officer Loren Buddress said.

The girls’ camp is the county’s first. Up until its recent opening, girls were housed in the same type of facilities as boys, although their needs are often worlds apart, according to Stewart Peterson, San Mateo County deputy chief of probation for institutions. "It’s become apparent in the last few years that what works for girls is about 180 degrees from what helps boys," Peterson said.
