Deputy OK’d to head shared police force

A potential step toward a merger of police forces was completed when the San Mateo City Council allowed its deputy police chief to take over the Burlingame Police Department.

Deputy police Chief Mike Callagy will lead the Burlingame force for a year, following the council’s 4-1 vote. The Burlingame City Council was scheduled to vote on it Monday, but did not get to that agenda item due to debate on high-speed rail.

Capt. Ed Wood has been the acting chief in Burlingame since December, when the former chief retired.

Burlingame is looking to save $750,000 with a merger of forces. An analysis of the merger is being conducted to see if it is worth it for both cities.
