Department heads crunching budget numbers

City Department heads are facing one of the toughest budget years in city history and are hard at work planning ahead for the fiscal year that begins July 1.

Mayor Gavin Newsom has asked department heads to come up with up to 30 percent in budget cut proposals to close the $522.2 million deficit.

That deficit was decreased to about $490 million with the $45 million in mid-year cuts announced Thursday.

On Monday, the Fire Commission holds a special 4 p.m. meeting to discuss with Fire Department Chief Joanne Hayes-White the Fire Department’s operating budget for the fiscal year that begins July 1.
