Dem governors accentuate the positive

Democratic governors championed new investments in education and infrastructure on Friday, on the backdrop of a national debate over Republican governors' hard-line approach to state budget deficits.

"We're not bracing for the worst, we're preparing for the best," Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley said from the front lawn of the White House following a meeting with the president and a dozen other Democratic governors.

O'Malley, chairman of the Democratic Governor's Asscoiation, classified the mood of the Democrats as "unrelenting optimism."

On whether the group discussed Republican governor's proposals to slash public employee pensions and roll back their collective bargaining rights, O'Malley said, "not really."

"Most of us see that as a distraction," he said.
