Decision over SF film chief still outstanding

Mayor Gavin Newsom has yet to pick a new film chief whose job is to oversee all of San Francisco’s filming activity and lure productions to the city by the Bay.

Newsom is apparently waiting on the Film Commission to recommend a candidate for the post. But when the commission met in closed session July 26 it did not forward any candidates for Newsom to consider. A meeting set for Aug. 12 was canceled due to lack of a quorum. The commission’s next meeting is scheduled for Sept. 27. Perhaps then Newsom will be handed a recommendation.

The Film Commission has been operating without an executive director since Stefanie Coyote’s controversial resignation, which came with a severance payout.

The amount of time elapsed without making a selection is seemingly not unusual for Newsom. It also took months for Newsom to select a new leader of the Department of Environment, which he announced on July 30.

The former director left that post at the end of December 2009.
