David Henderson, former local football star, dies in hospital

David Henderson, the former San Francisco prep football standout, died Monday night at San Francisco General Hospital.

Henderson, 21, was shot in the head May 26 in the 1400 block of Kirkwood Avenue in the Bayview district. Henderson had been kept alive in a medically induced coma at the hospital since the shooting.

Once pegged with a bright future in the NFL, Henderson struggled to play college ball after graduating from Lincoln High School and had been playing for the semipro Pacifica Islanders with aspirations to return to a college setting.

Henderson came back to San Francisco to live with his mother earlier this year and told The Examiner in an interview that he was attempting to move past off-field struggles and focus on football.

Henderson’s mother said she is planning funeral service for her son early next week.

“He was my best friend,” Qunzena Henderson said. “I love him and will miss him very much.”
