Danny Glover shows HANC some love

For those excited about turning a 36-year-old HANC Recycling Center into a community garden, there is a meeting Monday to talk about what they might want it to look like.

But for the people who were appalled at former Mayor Gavin Newsom’s push to close it, The City’s Operations and Neighborhood Services Committee is scheduled to discuss the issue February 14.

In December after two hours of both supportive and opposing outcry, the Recreation and Park Commission voted on a community garden design that led to the eviction of HANC from the old Kezar Stadium parking lot.

Nonprofit Neighborhood Parks Council founder Isabel Wade, a well-known parks advocate, is facilitating a meeting at McLaren Lodge in Golden Gate Park at 501 Stanyan St. from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the new design.

However, HANC Executive Director Ed Dunn plans to blast an announcement today that the local Democratic Party and neighbors -- such as actor Danny Glover -- support overturning the eviction.

Here’s the YouTube video of Glover, who says he has been living in the neighborhood since 1957 and is “dismayed” and “not happy” about The City’s decision.

The Recreation and Park Department’s eviction would require the center to vacate by March 4, but Dunn said, “they can’t kick us out."
