Daly testing waters for police, sheriff merger

Supervisor Chris Daly proposed November charter amendment that would merge the Police Department with the Sheriff’s Department had its first hearing Friday before the Board of Supervisors Rules Committee.

The proposal could save costs. It also would put the police under command of the elected sheriff.

The debate was limited, just Daly making his best case for it. The committee continued a decision on whether to send it to the full board and will tentatively make that decision next week on Friday.

“I don’t think that we can continue doing business as usual. I don’t think that the in-the-box stuff that we typically do is good enough when it comes to how government runs, how our budget works,” Daly said.
