Daily Outrage: Tainted evidence calls into question 185 drug cases

Where: Camden, N.J.

What: Charges were dropped or convictions vacated in 185 drug cases in one of the nation’s most crime-ridden cities because criminal investigations of five police officers suggested that evidence could have been tainted.

How: One officer pleaded guilty in federal court to conspiring with others. Kevin Parry admitted planting drugs on suspects, conducting illegal searches, threatening stiffer charges for uncooperative suspects, stealing drugs and money from suspects and paying informants with drugs.

What’s being done: The other four officers were suspended and are being investigated by a federal grand jury. Prosecutors reviewed more than 400 cases from the past five years in which one of the five was the arresting or investigating officer.
