Daily Outrage: Somalia peacekeepers routinely shell civilians

WHAT: African Union peacekeepers are indiscriminately shelling residential areas of Somalia’s capital, according to the AU’s own reports obtained by The Associated Press. The secret reports cover April to June and warn that if shelling continues, the peacekeepers will lose the support of the Somali people.

HOW: Human Rights Watch said in April that African peacekeepers and Somali government troops lobbed near-daily mortar rounds “simply bombarding opposition strongholds” or targeting crowded areas considered the source of incoming fire.

WHAT’S HAPPENING NOW: The Somali militants claimed they carried out twin bombings that killed 76 people in Uganda last week to avenge civilian deaths caused by AU peacekeepers, including Ugandan soldiers.
