Daily Outrage: Shoddy dental work exposes hundreds of veterans to diseases

WHAT: The St. Louis Veterans Affairs Medical Center’s dentistry clinic may have exposed more than 1,800 veterans to life-threatening diseases such as hepatitis and HIV. Some dental technicians reportedly violated safety rules by hand-washing tools before putting them in sterilizing machines.

SCARY WARNING: The center mailed letters to 1,812 veterans telling them they were at risk of contracting hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV from visiting the hospital for dental work.

WHAT’S BEING DONE: Rep. Russ Carnahan, D-Mo., is calling for an investigation and wants those responsible to be disciplined. “No veterans should have to worry about their personal safety ... when receiving health care from a VA hospital,” he said.
