Daily Outrage: Roosters found dead, kids abandoned at Texas cockfighting operation 

WHAT: More than 150 people were arrested and more than 100 birds were seized in connection with a major cockfighting operation in Texas.

WHY IT HAPPENED: Cockfighting is illegal in Texas and 39 other states, but it remains a lucrative business — some matches have purses as high as $30,000. Owners pay $300 to enter birds in fights, and attendees typically pay as much as $30 for admission.

WHY IT’S A BAD IDEA: A number of birds, who were outfitted with knives for the fights, were discovered already seriously injured or dead. Police also found drugs and took 10 to 15 children — some as young as 7 who had apparently been abandoned by their fleeing parents — into protective custody.
