Daily Outrage: Navy captain booted for questionable treatment of ship crew

WHO: Capt. Holly Graf of the Navy

WHAT: Graf was relieved from command of the Japan-based guided-missile cruiser USS Cowpens for “cruelty and maltreatment” of her 400-member crew. The Navy inspector general’s report said she “creates an environment of fear and hostility [and] frequently humiliates and belittles watch standers by screaming at them with profanities” in front of junior and senior crew members. Officers who served with her said she “would throw ceramic coffee cups at officers, spit in one officer’s face, throw binders and paperwork at people.”

WHAT’S BEING DONE: The greatest anger expressed on Navy blogs seems directed at the brass for promoting such an officer to positions of ever-increasing responsibility. Just like the fictional Capt. Queeg in “The Caine Mutiny,” Graf’s career is clearly over. She’s being shuffled off to a Navy weapons lab outside the capital.
