Daily Outrage: Money wasted on energy aid for bogus low earners

WHO: U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

WHAT: Through poor oversight of the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, the department wasted more than $100 million. Of that, $671,000 was allotted to individuals whose incomes made them ineligible, $370,000 was given to 725 prison inmates and $3.9 million went to program applicants who co-opted dead people’s identities.

WHY IT’S AN OUTRAGE:
While it’s the states’ responsibilities to ensure that they aren’t defrauded, the Government Accountability Office found that the Department of Health and Human Services offered little leadership — and ultimately, since it’s doling out the checks, it’s the department’s responsibility.

WHERE TO VENT: Department of Health and Human Services Administration for Children and Families, (202) 401-9351.
