Daily Outrage Mexican drug cartel schemed to blow up Texas dam

What: The Los Zetas drug cartel distributed confidential handbills at the Mexican side of the Rio Grande, warning residents to clear out ahead of a threatened explosion that was supposed to destroy the Falcon Dam in Texas and flood an area where about 4 million people live.

Why: Los Zetas was willing to harm millions of fellow Mexicans to exact revenge on the rival Gulf Cartel gang, which smuggles drugs in the area. Los Zetas is also implicated in armed robberies of Texan fishermen on Lake Falcon, the international reservoir behind the dam.

What was done: American and Mexican authorities hid in the brush around the dam and used hidden cameras to thwart the explosion. Small amounts of dynamite were found nearby. But the traffickers would have needed a tractor-trailer full of dynamite to blow up the dam.
