Daily Outrage: Hurricane Katrina bridge shootout victims were unarmed

WHO: Michael Lohman

WHAT: Former New Orleans police lieutenant Michael Lohman pleaded guilty Wednesday to charges of organizing a fake cover-up story for the seven officers accused of killing two unarmed civilians (including a mentally retarded man shot in the back) and wounding four others in the notorious Danziger Bridge shooting during the chaos after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

HOW: Lohman supervised the initial investigation at the shooting scene. He conspired to file a false police report covering up that officers fired at unarmed people crossing to buy food at a grocery store. The bogus report helped get state charges dismissed against the seven officers in 2008.

WHAT’S BEING DONE: An active federal investigation is probing other possible cover-up conspirators, including the officers accused of the shooting.
