WHAT: Five newborns died in a fire at a Bucharest, Romania, maternity hospital while the on-duty medical staff was having a celebration in another room. Six other babies are struggling to survive.
LOCKED OUT: There was only one card to open the automatic doors of the intensive care room, where the 400-degree fire started in an air conditioner. That card was held by the nurse in charge, who had left the premises.
ON VIDEO: Surveillance video showed medical staff and parents frantically trying to enter the burning intensive care unit, smashing a chair into the locked doors. The hospital managers have now been suspended until investigation is completed.
