Daily Outrage: Government natural disaster funds wasted on birthday cards

WHO: Federal Emergency Management Administration

WHAT: The Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General discovered that FEMA had made $247,100 worth of improper purchases on government credit cards. Much of the overspending came from inefficiency and poor organization in purchases, but some expenditures were purely ridiculous: For example, $4,318 was spent on birthday cards.

WHY IT’S AN OUTRAGE: FEMA’s purpose is to protect Americans from the effects of disasters. Wasted money negatively affects its ability to serve some of our most vulnerable citizens.

WHERE TO VENT: Call the Department of Homeland Security at (202) 282-8000.
