Daily Outrage: Gingerbread town demolished by vandals

WHERE: Bergen, Norway’s second-largest city

WHAT: Every year before Christmas in this picturesque North Sea port, children decorate hundreds of gingerbread houses to create “the world’s largest and greatest gingerbread town” in the central square. But this time vandals entered the unguarded display tent and crushed most of the 650 cookie houses, topping off the ruins with paint and fire extinguisher foam.

WHAT’S BEING DONE: Bergen rolled out the cookie dough and is rebuilding the entire landscape — receiving many out-of-town gingerbread houses too. Meanwhile, police seek information about any suspects “full of gingerbread dust” who “smell a long way” off. And the local bishop cooled Internet talk of pillorying the perpetrators, saying: “We must not lynch anyone over a few gingerbread houses.”
