Daily Outrage: German man killed trying to defend kids from muggers on crowded train

WHO: Dominik Brunner

WHAT:
Two older teens on a Munich commuter train were threatening and extorting four younger kids, including two girls. At least 20 witnesses saw it and did nothing. But Brunner came to the victims’ aid and was kicked and punched to death by the thugs.

WHAT THE REACTION WAS: The vicious crime has transfixed Germany. More than 2,000 people gathered for a rail station memorial service as trains throughout Munich’s mass transit system stopped for a minute to honor Brunner. Bavaria’s government posthumously awarded him the state’s highest decoration.

WHAT’S BEING DONE: The two teens have been arrested and jailed. And with German elections due Sept. 27, Chancellor Angela Merkel and other politicians are demanding tougher punishment for youth offenders.
