Daily Outrage: Census Bureau managers forging surveys

WHAT: Two Census Bureau managers from a Brooklyn field office were fired after whistleblower employees turned them in for faking at least 10,000 household surveys to meet final deadlines.

HOW: The cheating managers researched the phone book and Internet to make up reasonable answers to questionnaires. Then they pressured field interviewers to fill in some of the bogus surveys.

WHAT’S BEING DONE: The Census Bureau was unable to estimate costs for the suspect surveys to be redone by honest workers left in the Brooklyn office, but said it was OK because the census is nationally under budget anyway.
