Daily Outrage: Bribery case sends ex-Detroit councilwoman to prison

WHO: Monica Conyers

WHAT HAPPENED: The wife of longtime Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., was sentenced to more than three years in prison for taking bribes to push a $47 million sludge contract. The former Detroit city councilwoman, 45, is the biggest catch so far in the FBI’s wide-ranging investigation of Detroit city government corruption.

WHAT DIDN’T WORK: During a stormy court hearing Wednesday, Conyers wanted to withdraw her guilty plea, claiming she was “badgered” last year when she admitted taking cash from a Houston sludge company. But a transcript of her June hearing quoted her as denying any coercion and voluntarily pleading guilty to conspiracy.

LUCKY BREAK: Conyers’ sentencing judge declined to consider new charges that surfaced at the recent trial of her former aide, Sam Riddle. The duo allegedly shook down people for $69,500. Riddle jurors heard wiretapped phone calls in which Conyers seemingly discussed payoffs and said, “You’d better get my loot.”
