DA Harris: benefits to blame for prosecutors’ retirements

Despite turmoil at the District Attorney’s Office that surrounded the retirement of her highest-ranking manager last week, District Attorney Kamala Harris said Thursday that retirement benefits were the biggest reason behind a shakeup in her office.

Many of the most experienced attorneys are leaving the office because of the end of a Wellness Program that allowed city workers to collect huge payouts when they retire, Harris told the Board of Supervisors Budget and Finance Committee.

“I have about a dozen deputy DAs and assistant DAs who are the senior and veteran members of my office who, in many situations, have been forced to accept and take advantage of an opportunity that allows them to cash out in their retirement, receiving about twice as much as they would if they retired after June 30.”
