A bicyclist was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries Tuesday afternoon after colliding with a Muni bus.

The incident occurred about 4:40 p.m. at Market and New Montgomery streets, police Officer Albie Esparza said. The male bicyclist was taken to San Francisco General Hospital with serious injuries.

The bicyclist was riding parallel to a 31-Balboa bus on Market Street heading west when its wheel became stuck in the rail track, ejecting the rider, Muni spokesman Paul Rose said. The cyclist “made contact” with the rear wheels of the bus, Rose said.

Traffic is heavily affected in the area and all Muni lines are being routed to Mission street, commuters told The San Francisco Examiner.

Esparza advised motorists to avoid the area until at least 7 p.m.

The Muni driver is being placed on nondriving status, which is standard protocol in such situations, Rose said.
