Cutting Edge nightlife at the Peppermill Casino

Peppermill has invested $2.2 million in upgrades in the last three months to its Edge nightclub that opened a little more than a year ago.

If you’ve been intrigued by or want to frequent one of those exotic, high-end clubs shown in popular TV shows, that is Edge. Laser lights, music, dancing, smoke (fog), private areas with your own servers are all there in the 8,000-square-foot venue in Reno, Nev. Renovations included soundproofing to allow people to have a conversation in the lounge while there’s music playing on the dance floor.

“It’s one of Reno’s most popular clubs,” said Jill Stockton, communications manager at the Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority.

“It’s a different type of bar,” Stockton said. “There are a lot of different people of different ages that like to hang out there. You don’t expect something to be like that here in Reno.”

The Peppermill is at the south end of town near the convention center and the airport. Edge is on the second level near the Bimini Steakhouse and the spa. It opens to a patio and pool area.

There’s a strict dress code: No sports hats or attire, baggy clothing, bandanas or sports shoes.

The renovations, Edge General Manager Brian Kirgin said, are designed to keep customer interest high across age groups.

There’s more seating, a new light and laser system to accompany the music and engage guests, a sky box stage with DJ that overlooks the dance floor and Pandora’s Boxx — a windowed dance platform featuring themed professional dance vignettes.

A new liquid nitrogen machine to generate fog and chill the room has been added.

“I want our guests to have a different experience every time they walk through this door,” Kirgin said.

Kirgin, who opened various clubs at the Palms in Las Vegas, wants to attract a different type of audience, not just young people. Thursday is ladies night, Fridays the club opens earlier and there are salsa dancing lessons.

Annual events at Halloween, Thanksgiving and New Year’s are complemented by special events.

“This is the ultra-lounge,” Kirgin said. It will cater partly to hotel guests, partly to the local Reno crowd and partly to people visiting from out of town.

Members of Peppermill’s players club can get discounts at Edge depending on their membership tier.

Stockton said the visitors authority ( was using Edge to help promote the region’s marketing in the Bay Area.

“If you want to come in for a true nightclub experience,” she said, “Edge is the best place to get that, the dance floor, the VIP treatment, the pounding music.”
