Cosco Busan bar pilot attorney representing iPhone finder

A San Francisco lawyer who represented a bar pilot responsible for a 2007 oil spill in San Francisco Bay has taken on work for another high-profile client.

Jeffrey Bornstein, attorney for Cosco Busan container ship bar pilot John Cota, is representing a 21-year-old man who says he provided an iPhone prototype to a technology journalist.

Gizmodo published an exposé this month about the iPhone’s new features. The editor’s home was later raided by police.

“Brian (Hogan) was in a bar with friends when another bar patron handed him the phone after finding it on a bar stool,” Bornstein wrote in a statement Thursday. “Brian believed and Gizmodo emphasized to him that there was nothing wrong in sharing the phone with the tech press.”

Cota is serving a 10-month federal prison sentence after pleading guilty to environmental crimes in relation to the Nov. 7, 2007 oil spill.
