Cool dance season preview at S.F. State

Although the dance season has not officially begun yet, you can get an early taste of what’s coming up on Wednesday night, when 10 Bay Area dance artists and companies descend on San Francisco State to perform at "Destination: Dance SF."

The lineup for this event is spectacular in its diversity, showcasing short performances by Smuin Ballet, ODC, Alex Ketley and dancers from the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance, Janice Garrett and Dancers, Robert Moses’ Kin, Peruvian Dance Company, Micaya’s hip-hop group SoulForce, McCarthy Dance Project, Paco Gomes and Dancers and Haitian soloist Alicia Pierce.

With ballet, hip-hop, modern dance and traditional ethnic styles all represented on one stage, the concert promises to be a great evening for everyone who wants to sample the local talent.

ODC choreographer Brenda Way says that "Destination: Dance SF" is "a terrific way for people to get a taste of many different artistic visions." Although it has an entertainment format, Way says, this event can also be an educational one as well.

In fact, education is at the core of "Destination: Dance SF," which is the inaugural event for the American College Dance Festival Southwest Region Conference, hosted by San Francisco State University’s School of Music and Dance and attended by many major West Coast schools. The four-day conference, which includes workshops and master classes, ends at 3 p.m. Saturday with a Gala Concert that showcases the best student work.

"It’s absolutely fantastic that all these young and enthusiastic dancers will get an opportunity to see all these fantastic San Francisco dance companies," choreographer Robert Moses says.

"Destination: Dance SF" is an evening intended not only for the public and the aspiring students, but in a way for the performers themselves. Way, who has previously participated in such events, says that for dancers who rarely get an opportunity to see one another "they are extraordinarily fun because you get to meet other dancers."

For the rest of us, it’s a chance to survey the local dance scene and remind ourselves that we live in a major dance capital.
