Contest to pick Carnaval royalty

The Carnaval San Francisco King and Queen Competition at 8 p.m. Saturday will feature 20 contestants vying for honors in categories including costume, dance, music, audience response and Carnaval spirit. Not only do the winners get $500 each, they get to ride the Carnaval San Francisco Grand Parade on May 27. (The parade will be broadcast on television on KRON Channel 4 and Telemundo.)

Kellita and Hot Pink Feathers will emcee the contest, which is produced by the Mission Neighborhood Centers, Inc. and supported by San Francisco’s Grants for the Arts. Entertainment also includes appearances by DJ Vanka and Sistas-Wit-Style. Organizers invite both singles and couples to the competition; singles in search of paramours will receive a single-heart sticker to wear; couples may wear stickers with two hearts.

Carnaval San Francisco began 29 years ago as a result of efforts by musicians, artists and residents who wanted to bring the spirit of Latin American and Caribbean culture to The City.

This year’s competition is at Fanatics Sports Entertainment Complex, 601 Cesar Chavez St., San Francisco. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 at the door, $15 in advance.
