Congressman spends big on thank-yous

WHAT: Rep. David Rivera, R-Miami, transferred at least $75,000 in contributions for his abandoned Florida state Senate re-election campaign into an aide-run company to make “thank-you” gifts to supporters of his successful run for Congress.

WHAT’S BEING DONE: Rivera’s money-juggling is now under criminal investigation by Miami-Dade County police and prosecutors who have become suspicious of the new congressman’s personal and campaign accounts.

WHY IT’S OUTRAGEOUS: From 2004 to 2010, Rivera spent almost $243,000 in campaign donations on shady “thank-you” expenses — almost one-quarter of all the thank-you money spent by Florida politicians during that period.
