Congress less supportive of the PATRIOT Act than the last time

Yesterday's vote against reauthorizing key provisions of the PATRIOT Act did not get a lot of attention, which is understandable. Although it failed, the reauthorization is likely to succeed soon -- it was brought up yesterday under an expedited process that requires a 2/3rds vote. Although it failed, the measure received a clear majority of 277 votes.

A regular order House vote will follow soon, and the bill will pass. But it is worth noting that 26 Republicans, including a handful of freshmen, voted against this, whereas only ten voted against the PATRIOT Act last time . That's more than the ten who voted against reauthorization last year. (Roll call vote is here, and don't be fooled by the unrelated bill title -- this was basically snuck through last time by the Democratic majority.) And last time, when it received 315 votes, the bill also had more Democratic support.

Here are the Republicans who voted against this time -- you'll notice that the Georgia delegation is especially well-represented.
