Concord woman charged in boyfriend's death

A Concord woman is facing a murder charge in the death of her boyfriend, whose death was initially classified as natural.

Police say new evidence indicates 41-year-old Dava Alizabeth-Ann Steen suffocated her boyfriend, 47-year-old Danny Ray Bennett, during a fight.

Steen was charged on Tuesday and is being held in lieu of $1 million bail at a jail in Richmond.

Bennett died on Nov. 25 at the home he shared with Steen. Authorities had been summoned there on a report that Bennett had stopped breathing. They were unable to resuscitate him.

The death was classified as natural after authorities verified Steen's claim that Bennett had a history of medical problems.

But police say they received a tip on Jan. 17 that Steen had killed Bennett and gathered new evidence to support that claim.
