Committee to tackle Newsom’s budget

The Board of Supervisors Budget and Finance Committee meets Wednesday to begin deliberations over Mayor Gavin Newsom’s proposed $6.5 billion budget for the fiscal year, which begins July 1. The meetings, led by committee chair Supervisor John Avalos, are scheduled to continue until June 30, when a vote to send the revised budget to the full board for approval is expected.

Department heads will come before the committee one at a time, as the committee goes over each proposed budget. Debate has already started over cuts to certain services, which committee members will seek to restore by trying to make cuts elsewhere in the budget proposal and using that money to offset cuts they don’t like.
