Comedy weekend on tap at John Ascuaga’s Nugget

Australian-born comedian Jim Jefferies has been called “shockingly charming and brutally honest.”

While performing for troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, he narrowly avoided bombs and he once even received a black eye from a ticked-off audience member in Manchester, England.

The comic will bring his act to in Reno, Nev., for the first time in the Celebrity Showroom of John Ascuaga’s Nugget on April 1 as part of April Fools Comedy Weekend.

The Comedy Weekend is the first to hit the Nugget, which found inspiration from the April Fools holiday to put on the show.

More famous in the U.K., Jefferies has performed on BBC radio and TV in the U.K. for the past eight years but now resides in Los Angeles. He starred in his own comedy special for HBO, “I Swear to God,” with another coming soon.

The Nugget’s night of comedy also includes a former Marine lieutenant colonel. Comedian Rob Riggle will Join Jefferies for the night of laughs. Riggle served in the United States military in Liberia, Kosovo and Afghanistan and began performing as a comedian while on duty in 1997.

Riggle has performed sketch and improv comedy for many years as part of the Upright Citizens Brigade, and in 2008 brought his act to “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” where he made satirical reports from China during the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Riggle has appeared on TV shows including “The Office,” “Human Giant,” “Chappelle’s Show,” “Arrested Development” and “Comedy Central Presents.” He also made numerous appearances on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” between 1998 and 2004.

His film credits include “Blackballed: The Bobby Dukes Story,” “Talladega Nights,” “Going the Distance,” “Step Brothers” and “The Other Guys.” This year, Riggle will appear in “Everybody Loves Whales” with Drew Barrymore.

Jefferies will perform on April 1 at the Nugget and Riggle will follow him on April 2. Tickets for both acts are reasonably priced at $20 or $35.
