Comedians depict true-to-life scenes

Comedians Renee Taylor and Joseph Bologna have a one-of-a-kind, odd little show at the Empire Plush Room that’s got a lot of heart and good for at least a few laughs. Now celebrating more than 40 years of marriage — they wed in 1965 — the couple has put together a low-key, 70-minute hodge-podge of an act, with standup bits, snippets of home video, clips from their movies, and live re-enactment of scenes from their stage plays.

Although the cobbled-together material is hardly spanking fresh, it indeed is fueled by the couple’s real-life experience, and that does count for something.

Their tales of what happens when an Italian boy from Brooklyn teams up with a Jewish girl from the Bronx — an unusual thing four decades ago — have a familiar universality today.

Taylor’s delightful stories about her mother reveal someone who does more than pile on the guilt. She says that, as a member of a reincarnation club, her mom wasn’t surprised to discover that in a previous life she had once had been a Spanish contessa: "That’s why I always fill up on guacamole."

Bologna’s father is humorously, tenderly featured in a scene they act out from their play "Lovers and Other Strangers," which was made into an Oscar-nominated movie.

On the video front, they show clips from their wedding reception, as well as sexy scenes from some movies in which they appeared, "Made for Each Other," and "It Had to Be You."

The show closes with more video footage of the various re-commitment ceremonies they have held through the years. It’s a touching, yet funny tribute to the couple, whose long-lasting love affair has semi-autobiographically been documented in an aptly titled Broadway show "If You Ever Leave Me … I’m Going With You."
