A traffic collision on Highway 101 near Candlestick Park send three cars off the roadway and onto the rocks near the water Monday.

Traffic is expected to be slow for the Monday evening commute since the California Highway Patrol is keeping at least one lane closed as they pull the vehicles off the rocks.

The incident, first reported at 3 p.m., is a major-injury accident with three vehicles that smashed into each other and ran off the road, stopping feet before the Bay, according to CHP Officer Kevin Bartlett.

One person was transported to San Francisco General Hospital with injuries, their condition was unknown.

The coast guard also deployed a helicopter to check for fluids and oil that may have gotten in the water.

Bartlett said no car ended up in the water.

The slow lane is closed as drivers approach Candlestick to allow emergency crews to tow the vehicles back on the roadway. The lane is expected to be cleared by 5:30 p.m.

The stop and go traffic was the cause of another accident involving four other vehicles just south of this incident. That was reported around 4:15 p.m. The second incident was reported to have minor injuries and included a motorcycle “dropping his bike,” according to Bartlett.
