Coast-focused photos sought for contest

Sylvie Lee, a California Coastal Commission communications official, is accepting applications for the 12th annual Amateur Coastal Photography Contest, which offers hotel stays as prizes, until Aug. 31. Categories include the scenic coast, the ways people use the coast and coastal wildlife.

What are types of pictures are you looking for? We’re looking for pictures that exemplify what’s beautiful and interesting and diverse about our coastline. We look for pictures that look beautiful, say “California coast” to the judges, show our native wildlife and spectacular scenery and show people enjoying the coast.

What is the purpose of the contest? We want to encourage the public to appreciate the coast, think about why they value our coast and maybe spark their interest in taking a trip to take some great pictures.

How can readers enter the contest? Visit coast4u.org and click on the photo contest link. The guidelines and entry form are there, along with examples of who has won in the past.

What have been your favorite pictures in the past? I love beautiful underwater photography and I love pictures of kids who have priceless expressions on their faces.
