Club for Growth gives mixed grade to Santorum

Earlier today, I noted that former Sen. Rick Santorum is vulnerable to the criticism that he was a Bush era big government Republican. The Club for Growth is now out with a more detailed white paper on his record, and it gives him a mixed grade.

Santorum is credited for having a "very strong" record on taxes, Social Security reform, and welfare reform. But he's dinged for his record on earmarks, flirtations with protectionist trade policies, and support for No Child Left Behind and the Medicare prescription drug plan.

The report suggested his spending record was affected by political expediency: "An examination of his scores in the NTU rating of Congress shows that Santorum compiled a very strong record on taxes and spending in the first four years of each of his two Senate terms, then a sharp swing to below the Senate Republican average in the Congress before his reelection campaign."
