Clinic employee may have exposed patients to HIV, hepatitis

A former employee of a Madison, Wis., clinic may have exposed 2,345 patients to bloodborne diseases such as hepatitis B and C and HIV by "inappropriately" misusing demonstration insulin finger-stick devices for more than five years.

The ongoing infraction was belatedly discovered during an internal review.

The clinic is now contacting at-risk patients to test whether they might have been exposed. Staff training and monitoring will also be beefed up.
