Civic Center community garden takes root

San Francisco broke ground Tuesday on a new community garden as a way to promote healthier food and urban agriculture.

Standing in the heart of San Francisco’s Civic Center, Mayor Gavin Newsom joined volunteers with shovels and gloves and started digging in the dirt at the new community garden. The Civic Center garden is part of a larger effort by Kraft Triscuit and Urban Farming, a Michigan-based nonprofit, to convert unused lands and build 50 community gardens this year.

The food grown at the community garden will go to the volunteers who help maintain it.
