City repays portion of federal grant

District Attorney KamalaHarris released a joint statement Wednesday with City Attorney Dennis Herrera to announce that San Francisco has returned $2.7 million in federal grant money awarded to The City intended for border-related crimes.

According to an audit by the U.S. Office of Inspector General, San Francisco couldn’t provide auditors with a list of cases that qualified for $5.4 million in funding, which prompted the Department of Justice to ask for the money back. The statement said The City is committed to repaying additional amounts to the federal government "once we are able to reach an agreement … on the cases eligible for reimbursement."
