City Hall: Legislators approve Transbay Cable

A plan to submerge an electrical line beneath the floor of the Bay — to bring energy from Pittsburg to San Francisco — was approved by the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday with a 9-2 vote.

In exchange for the nonexclusive license for use of property within the San Francisco County line, the Port of San Francisco would receive at least $36.2 million during the initial 25-year licensing period and the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission would receive $23.5 million.

The cable is a joint project between Babcock and Brown and the city of Pittsburg.

Supervisors Chris Daly and Ross Mirkarimi voted against the resolution supporting the project.

Critics of the project said it didn’t fit with The City’s progressive energy policies.

At the last negotiation meeting in June, both sides deadlocked on when a 3 percent raise would go into effect.

The union wanted the raise to start on July 1 and the district wanted to wait until Jan. 1, 2008.

The teachers’ contract expired June 30.
