Chump change: Commission wastes six months on investigating alleged theft of $2.50

WHO: New York City Waterfront Commission

WHAT: Following a suspect who allegedly is part of a mob absconding with a $2 bottle of iced tea that was used to wash down a pilfered 50-cent piece of sausage, the government body spent six months investigating what became to be known as Operation Missing Link, the New York Daily News reported.

WHAT’S BEING SAID: While an attorney for the commission would only say “it takes any theft in the port seriously — especially theft involving extortion,” political officials are not reacting well. “It’s like Capt. Queeg and the strawberries,” New Jersey state Sen. Raymond Lesniak said. “It’s a $2.50 ongoing investigation.”
