Chinese firm, lured by city program, will now expand in San Francisco

A China-based solar energy company is expanding its North American headquarters in downtown San Francisco, the Mayor’s Office announced Tuesday.

Mayor Ed Lee said that GCL Solar Energy, the U.S. subsidiary of a Chinese supplier of polysilicon and solar wafers, will open a new headquarters in a 15,000-square-foot office at One Market St.

“GCL Solar Energy’s success underscores our success in attracting and retaining exceptional, industry-leading cleantech firms to San Francisco,” Lee said in a statement.

The company first opened in San Francisco in 2009 after being recruited by ChinaSF, a program that works to bolster business between The City and China.
