Chinatown kicks off Year of the Rat with public safety event 

A public safety awareness news conference in San Francisco designed to teach city residents crime-prevention tips was scheduled for this morning in Chinatown to kick off the Year of the Rat celebrations.

The event is being held by the group San Francisco Safety Awareness for Everyone. Volunteers from the community and members of the San Francisco Police Department, the California Department of Corrections, the Community Youth Center, the American Red Cross Youth for Elderly Bay Area Chapter and mayor's office officials were expected to attend.

As part of the event, scheduled tobegin at 11 a.m. at Grant Avenue and Bush Street, volunteers planned to distribute crime prevention tips to merchants and shoppers in Chinatown, according to the safety awareness group.

The tips include how to prevent extortion, burglary, robbery and details on how to handle crime situations.

Shoppers were expected to get packets containing the tips, along with resource information.
